Breastfeeding support mum & baby

New mums can often feel unsure about breastfeeding, as they don’t know what to expect and can worry that it’s not going right. They may have difficulty establishing breastfeeding, it may feel awkward or painful, or they may have other concerns. Luckily, there are a number of breastfeeding drop-ins in the Twickenham area, where new mums can go to get breastfeeding support from professionals about a whole host of concerns and queries.

Common concerns include whether they are producing enough milk, why they are finding it painful, when and how they should be expressing milk, and how to mix-feed or transition to formula. Breastfeeding counsellors are highly qualified and listen without judging or criticising, offering suggestions and research-based information. Breastfeeding is a skill that needs to be learnt, and it can take a bit of time and practice for mums (and babies!) to get the hang of it. In many cases, just changing the baby’s position at the breast slightly or feeding them more often can make a positive difference.

The most comprehensive and up-to-date list of breastfeeding drop-ins in the vicinity is on the NCT’s website. Many of these are run by NCT breastfeeding counsellors / lactation consultants (these drop-ins also offer light refreshments) and some are run by the local authority. One-to-one support is available and there is often the opportunity for breastfeeding mums to get together to socialise (more details on the NCT’s website). The two we have highlighted in our calendar are the two most local to us – Tuesdays at the United Reform Church on Twickenham Green, TW2 and Thursdays at the South Isleworth Children’s Centre, Worple Road, Isleworth, TW7.

Liz Lambourn (07730 232247) and Geraldine Chew (07808 728477), who are local Lactation Consultants, are also available for private consultations either at home or at The Maris Practice in Twickenham. Both offer weekday, evening and weekend appointments, and come highly recommended.

  • Great resource and good to know there is so much going on for parents in Twickenham and surrounding areas. As the local breastfeeding counsellor it’s great being able to support new mums at the Tues Twickenham Green United Reformed church breastfeeding drop in-and the Thurs one at the South Isleworth Children’s centre.
